From the street this may appear to be a pretty standard build of a contemporary, custom home. However beyond what is immediately visible, is an extravagant 5 level residence delivered on a steep, sloping, waterfront site in Sydney’s Kangaroo Point, which stands now as a testament to the exceptional skill and craftsmanship of UNIQ Building Group.
The client’s main objective was to create a home that would suit their lifestyle and love for entertaining, with open spaces that would accommodate a large number of guests.
A long, curvy flight of exterior stairs rises 20 meters from the boathouse to the highest level of the home. This visually compelling, sturdy geometric structure folds down from the backyard along natural rock. The stairway is constructed of spotted gum timber and is laced with external pine handrails that highlight the green landscape. The staircase provides the opportunity for long walks by the bay and a trip down to the boathouse for a relaxing Sunday afternoon with the family, bringing life to the house and making it a striking and relevant part of the home.
UNIQ rose to the challenges of the difficult building site, seeing it as an opportunity to deliver an innovative design with a focus on sustainable living and incorporating 650 square meters of living space, this spectacular, 6 bedroom, 5 bathroom home is jam-packed with unique details and luxurious finishes.
The build began by managing the excavation on a very steep incline roughing through rock and soil to stabilise the formwork. To overcome the slope, UNIQ contended with environmental impacts and additional costs and solved problems that arose from the topography with natural and artificial structures. Environmental concerns including the possibility of bushfires and flooding were addressed during the build. A main focus was placed on providing solutions for the site slope, ground conditions and stormwater runoff. The existing sandstone found onsite was reused to redress the retaining walls and they applied Alucobond and zinc cladding to the external facade.
Inside, UNIQ created open spaces finished with precise edges and clean glass surrounds to capture natural sunlight and maximise the water views. The exceptional craftsmanship is highlighted throughout with extensive custom cabinetry, Burmese teak installed in the shower areas, and a galaxy ceiling in the cinema room as just a few inclusions of this incredible home that also includes a bar, steam room, cool room and home gym.
