Over the past 6 years, Sydney’s Avenue One Design has amassed an outstanding portfolio of high-end residential projects in some of Sydney’s most affluent suburbs. This contemporary coastal home at Whale Beach is an excellent example of the team’s vision which brings minimalism and function to luxury homes. By layering simple materials and natural elements, Avenue One’s design team continually create innovative spaces that exude style.
Built on a steep sloping site surrounded by rocks and stone, the home is built into the cliff-face over multiple levels, taking advantage of the natural contours of the site. Off-form concrete form the foundations of the home tonally complement the natural rock outcrops, whilst the angular lines of the home create contrast, and from the cliff face, the diagonal lines of the staircase that are almost parallel to the incline of the plot offer a striking sculptural distinction.
Paired with hardwood cladding, the home is reflective of the community’s environmentally conscious values as well as the growing push to combine contemporary principles with natural themes. These values are further reflected in the client’s wishes for a passive solar design that takes advantage of the location while imposing as little as possible on the environment, both during the build and long into the home’s lifetime. By using building materials like saw-cut subterranean sandstone, the home has a pleasing textural aesthetic. Rather than conceding beauty to environmentalism, these design choices have only added to the home’s visual appeal.
Incorporating five bedrooms, three full-sized bathrooms and a powder room each space has been expertly designed to maximise the spectacular ocean views. By combining communal spaces like the open-plan kitchen, living room, and bar, occupants are able to take in the stunning seascape without interruption. However, the team at Avenue One understand the importance of intimacy within the home and this has been addressed in spaces like the private reading nook and the library overlooking a tranquil internal garden.
