A spectacular building site always presents the opportunity to create something very special and this is certainly the case with this Flinders beach house. ‘Always’ – a gorgeous custom home by architects Kennedy Nolan, positioned, overlooking the beach on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Designed as a weekend and summer retreat that would eventually transition into a permanent residence for the owners, ‘Always’ integrates beautifully with the natural surroundings and is a true reflection of its name which is a reference to the statement “Always was, always will be, aboriginal land’.
Internally, Kennedy Nolan, set out to create a home that would immediately create atmosphere on entry, requiring a carefully refined palette with a large focus on organic materials. Consequently, the home has a wonderful warmth and cosiness about it which sits in complete contrast with the cool tones and at times wildness of the ocean panoramas outside.
Living so close to ocean that you can smell and hear the water offers a relaxed and unwind lifestyle and this Flinders beach house required spaces conducive to hosting all year round. With a glass dominated structure, energy efficiency was a prime consideration and the most practical choice for insulation was a timber lining which was widely used throughout the home.
With a specific vision in mind, Modinex were called in to supply a bespoke architectural solution to prevent heat from escaping during the cold Victorian months and block the hot air from venturing in during the summer months.
With their Western Red Cedar internal linings in a custom profile and their eye-catching Diamond Clad range, the lining served its purpose for insulation throughout the entire home including ceilings and walls as well as adding to the warm inviting feel of the home.
The diamond shaped vee of the unique cladding used both horizontally and vertically also offers a different light and look in each room, whilst also framing the spectacular ocean views.
