Set against the coastal backdrop of City Beach, this striking residence by Hillam Architects stands as a bold expression of contemporary residential design. Sculptural and refined, this three storey home has fast become a local landmark – a residence defined by its textural rawness, crisp geometry and the considered way that its modern form feels integrated within the coastal landscape.
Hillam Architects has long held the belief that the quality of our built environment shapes the quality of our lives. This project brings that philosophy to life with absolute clarity. Working collaboratively with the client, the studio crafted a home that not only presents a strong architectural identity but also responds instinctively to the owners’ lifestyle, routines and desire for privacy.
At first glance, the palette is striking in its restraint. The upper floor reads as a raw concrete shell, that appears to float above a sweep of frameless glazing. It’s a façade that shifts constantly throughout the day, the textured curves, angles and shadows revealing themselves anew as you move around the structure.
A tiered landscape pathway navigates the slope of the site, guiding visitors toward the entry foyer. Below, the basement level provides generous car parking, a guest suite, a bathroom, a dedicated music room designed to accommodate a baby grand, and a climate-controlled wine cellar.
The ground floor is planned with lifestyle at its core. Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a gym, a cabana, bar areas, a sitting room, a study, and a relaxed living zone wrap around the central pool courtyard. This configuration creates a sense of sanctuary, with the bedroom and gym wings shielding the pool area and forming intimate spaces for both everyday living and low-key entertaining.
Above, the first floor shifts in form and orientation, ensuring the main living spaces capture uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean. Here, the master suite with its private ensuite sits alongside a second living area, dining room, theatre, sleek contemporary kitchen, greenhouse and alfresco zone. Expansive glazing draws the coastline into the home, creating a connection between the ocean panorama and the interior.
Throughout, the materiality remains consistent, raw concrete, enhanced by the warmth of timber and soft lighting, and strategically placed windows to take advantage of the coastal setting. The design feels both enduring and deeply considered, the architecture working in harmony with the site rather than competing with it.
In this City Beach custom home, Hillam has crafted another local landmark – a residence that captures the confidence, clarity, and coastal connection that define Western Australian architecture at its best.
