Winner of the Perth 2019 HIA Greensmart Sustainable Home award, ‘Red Zephyr Blue House’ is a modest yet striking home designed by CAPA (Carrier and Postmus Architects) and built by multi-award winning Weststyle, that beautifully complements its locale in Perth’s inner-city Shenton Park.
Situated on a narrow block, the house is grounded with a palette of dark stone and masonry elements. Concrete on the upper floor is softened by greenery and a custom-designed metal screen that adds a retro feel that continues throughout the interior of the home.
A thick bricked wall with basket woven brickwork at either end acts as a spine on the lower level connecting the spaces. The kitchen is positioned at the centre and is surrounded by an open layering of dining, shaded terraces, pond, gardens and summer gazebo spaces ensuring of an abundance of natural light whilst louvres allow the occupants to adjust light and airflow to suit both the time of day and the season.
A feature timber post on the breakfast bar and ceiling hung shelving add a ‘scandi’ look to the sleek, contemporary finishes
On the upper floor a studio and bedroom offer a viewing platform over the adjacent lake and landscape beyond. Expressed masonry and stone continue from ground to the upper levels, integrating with cabinetry and lighting.
As a material contrast, a lightness is expressed over the house by a white ‘draped’ metal roof and feature gable frieze, which provides both an enclosure and a canvas for diffused lighting from within.
