A home cinema needs to be designed to feel as much a part of the house as any other living space, yet perform to the standard of the world’s best private theatres. And this is exactly what esteemed cinema designers, Wavetrain Cinemas, have achieved in their recent project named 007 Bahama Hideaway.

It carries a hint of intrigue from the James Bond film No Time To Die, while staying true to the laid-back sophistication of the home’s island-resort style. Completed in July 2025, it has already gained industry recognition as a finalist in the 2025 CEDIA Awards for Best Home Cinema (APAC) and Excellence In categories.

The brief from the owners was simple to say but demanding to achieve. They wanted a cinema for 10–12 guests with the punch that could deliver the impact of a blockbuster Hollywood film and the refinement of a live concert, all without disturbing the rest of the home. This meant complete sound isolation, especially for the guest bedroom directly above the cinema, without compromise of video and audio quality, and absolute reliability given the home’s regional location in tropical Rockhampton in Queensland.

To meet those goals, Wavetrain designed a fully sound-isolated structure with a custom made STC (Sound Transmission Class) rated double-door airlock isolates sound, achieving an NC23 (Noise Criterion level with the higher number being louder) noise rating which is so quiet that whispered dialogue and the most delicate notes in a film score are heard in perfect detail. At the other end of the spectrum, a carefully engineered subwoofer array delivers deep, controlled bass without rattles or distortion, ensuring every low-frequency effect is felt with precision rather than boom.

This advanced AV setup features a ribbon-tweeter speaker system, chosen for its ability to deliver exceptionally clear and detailed high-frequency sound ideal for immersive audio experiences. That led to the selection of the Elementi Air range, which complements the precision of ribbon tweeters. On the video side, the system achieves true REC2020 colour performance at 200 Nits brightness using a Christie M4K25 RGB laser projector. This means the projector can display ultra-rich, lifelike colours with excellent brightness, making it perfect for high-end cinema quality picture. The projection system is housed within a fully sealed hushbox, featuring optical port glass and active ventilation to maintain optimal operating conditions while eliminating fan noise. To ensure smooth operation in a remote or regional location, even from thousands of kilometres away, the system includes full remote access and monitoring capabilities. Audio is transmitted digitally over IP networks (AOIP), which simplifies cabling and allows flexible control, while localized amplification ensures powerful sound exactly where it’s needed. The setup also integrates seamlessly with the HVAC system to maintain ideal conditions for the equipment for reliability and performance over time.

Every element of this home cinema has been meticulously designed and layered to achieve both visual impact and technical sophistication. The walls and ceiling are dressed in custom fabric wrapped panels, engineered to let sound pass through while discreetly hiding speakers and acoustic treatments.

Lighting plays a starring role in the shaping the atmosphere of the room. With multiple layers strategically placed to shift the mood instantly, from dramatic cinematic darkness to a warm and inviting ambiance. Pre-programmed lighting sequences were designed to highlight architectural contours and surface textures, gently directing the viewer’s focus and enriching the overall sensory experience. Lighting accessories also add another layer of craftsmanship and design, from a rattan and rubberwood table lamp to a petite brass lamp with a mesh shade add a layer of authenticity.

The overall design takes cues from James Bond’s hideout in No Time to Die, merging cinematic intrigue with the charm of Queenslander style architecture. Thoughtfully selected materials and finishes mirror those found throughout the home, ensuring the cinema feels like a natural extension of its environment. Natural fibres and materials such as timber, leather, wool, rattan, sisal and brass were chosen, each selected for its tactile richness to age gracefully giving it a lived-in elegance which balance cutting-edge technology with beautiful design. The Blackbutt timber flooring is stained to match the wall veneer and finished with oil to reduce glare during screenings, while allowing the surface to develop a rich patina. Pull-up leather was selected for its distinctive character, which evolves beautifully with wear.

Details carry a sense of craft and personality, from a floating step with integrated side tables to the subtle cut of the Spectre symbol in the rear timber panel. Decorative pieces such as a hand-braided pendant cord made from recycled plastic bottles, a sisal rug woven from agave fibres, and a looped carpet of 100% New Zealand wool offering cozy warmth underfoot add textural accents, add richness and dimension. Various tones of timber are deliberately combined to create visual rhythm and complement the home’s broader design language. Even functional pieces, such as the leather trunk, are chosen as much for their sculptural presence as for their practicality, ensuring every element contributes to both performance and atmosphere.
