When it comes to refined interiors, it’s the finer details that define a space. Architectural features and quality finishes may lay the foundation, but it’s the layering of texture and softness that makes a house feel like a home. Leading that shift is Diana Taylor, founder of boutique studio Sway Curtains. Her path wasn’t conventional. With a background in actuarial science, Diana had trained her mind for numbers and precision, not interiors, however it was during her own renovation that she uncovered a gap in the market.
“There were either mass produced, off-the-shelf options, or extremely high end designer curtains with heavy mark up but very little in between,” she recalls. Rather than compromise, Diana set out to create a studio that combined a exceptional craftsmanship with a curated approach.
Today, Sway Curtains has delivered more than 3,000 custom installations across Australia, from inner city penthouses to sprawling coastal retreats. Each project begins not with fabric swatches, but with a conversation. “We always start with mood. How should the space feel – soft, grounded, bold, airy? That drives everything before we even talk materials.”
From there, sourcing begins – premium Australian textiles and fine European imports form the backbone of Sway’s collections, chosen for their drape, weight and longevity.
Installations are planned with millimetre precision, whether it’s ripple fold curtains gliding across five metre glazing or motorised blinds disappearing neatly into recessed ceilings.
The journey to this point, however, was anything but glamorous. “I used to do consults with fabric rolls in the car and samples under my arm,” she laughs. “But even then, I knew people building a custom home wanted something better.”
That quiet confidence has now positioned Sway Curtains as a trusted collaborator to some of Australia’s leading builders, architects and designers. For Diana, the common thread between her past career and her present success is clear.
