There is a lot to love about where furniture design is heading. Beautiful forms are always important, of course, but increasingly it’s the richness of the materials around them that makes a piece really special – a fabulous fabric with just enough texture, the depth and movement of natural stone, the smooth finish of timber or a colour that brings something unexpected to an otherwise restrained room. As we look ahead to 2027 furniture trends, it’s this more layered approach that feels particularly exciting. Not layering for the sake of adding more, but bringing together beautiful materials, finishes and colours in ways that give an interior warmth, depth and personality.
Behind that philosophy is RJ Living, a name that has spent more than a decade building a distinctive place in contemporary furniture design. Founded by David Janovic, the Australian furniture house designs its collections with a focus on considered design, beautiful proportions, quality craftsmanship and exceptional finishing. Its furniture that is created for everyday living but with longevity in mind, with pieces intended to remain relevant well beyond a single season. So rather than reinventing what already works, RJ Living’s latest collection explores how richer materiality, new fabrics, deeper finishes and expressive colour can bring another dimension to both some of their established favourites and new pieces.
Berg in Fleck Rust is a particularly appealing example, introducing a warm, earthy red with a flecked texture that creates subtle tonal variation through the fabric. Designed to work naturally with Oak, the new Deep Oak finish and warmer stone, it brings colour into an interior without demanding that everything around it follow suit.
Deep Oak takes familiar designs in another direction. Introduced across pieces including the Henri Dining Chair, the darker timber gives the form a richer presence while retaining the proportions that made it appealing in the first place. It also lends itself beautifully to interiors where timber tones are mixed rather than perfectly matched – something we expect to see much more of as interiors become increasingly layered.
Stone brings its own richness with the introduction of Check in Espresso Marble. The deep new marble colourway gives an already loved design a moodier character, while the natural movement and variation within the stone allows the material itself to become part of the visual interest.
For Samuel Clarke, Head of Product at RJ Living, seeing established collections evolve is one of the most exciting aspects of the new season.
“One of the things I’m most excited about is seeing our most-loved collections evolve,” he says. “New formats, expressive finishes, fresh upholstery and richer materials give customers more ways to create cohesive, layered interiors with pieces designed to last.”
It’s an approach that says something interesting about 2027 furniture trends more broadly. New doesn’t necessarily have to mean completely different. When the underlying design is strong, changing the fabric, timber, stone or finish can give a piece an entirely new character while preserving the qualities that made it worth keeping in the first place.
RJ Living has also broadened the collection with new pieces across living, dining, bedroom and entertaining spaces, while the same exploration of colour and materiality extends outdoors ahead of summer.
Terrazza in Pimento is one of the standouts. The new concrete form combines the architectural quality of the material with a saturated, earthy colour that feels particularly suited to outdoor living. Against greenery, natural stone and timber, Pimento introduces warmth while creating another opportunity to carry elements of the interior palette beyond the walls of the home.
Perhaps that is what feels most relevant as we look towards 2027. It isn’t about one prescribed colour, material or piece that every home suddenly needs. The more interesting direction is the freedom to bring beautiful things together – darker timber with lighter finishes, expressive stone with tactile upholstery, and richer colour alongside quieter elements.
RJ Living’s new season offers more ways to do exactly that, while staying true to the inspired design, craftsmanship and longevity that have always sat at the heart of the brand.
