With a corner building site in Sydney’s northern beach-side suburb of Avalon, the clients of this new home, built by Dancore Construction, wanted a home for entertaining,  that would maximise the surrounding leafy outlook and district views and enable them to comfortably display their extensive artwork collection.

The design solution by architect Peter Downes, was a simple rectangular shape, but with the addition of a few twists, such as an angled roofline and a unique combination of materials including Colorbond, weatherboard and sandstone the resulting home is a contemporary twist on traditional Australian architecture.

In order to make the most of the surrounding views, the large open-plan living area has been placed on the upper floor with a covered alfresco area at either end, which fitting the client’s brief. provides an expansive area to entertain large gatherings. Central to the area is the sleek and stylish kitchen which has been finished with a striking black stone island bench and dark timber veneer cabinetry, perfectly complementing the rich herringbone parquetry.

Dramatic steel frames that support the sloping roofline, add to the contemporary feel of the interior whilst high east facing windows provide treetop views and allow in the morning sun and cool summer breezes.

Although large, the clever exterior combination of sandstone and Colorbond has created a home that sits harmoniously in its surroundings whilst also being architecturally interesting from all angles. On the western side a wave pattern has been added to the Colorbond cladding to break up the height and soften the appearance of the angular lines.

Extensive landscaping including sandstone retaining walls and a winding entry staircase with custom balustrading create an impressive entry into the home.

From the curbed timber hand railing on the exterior staircase to the quality of finishes throughout the interior of this home, Dancore’s expert craftsmanship and attention to detail is clearly apparent. The home is also the recipient of several awards including Best use of Architectural Product for Colorbond.
