With Morada - Luxury Linear Bricks by PGH

Renovating a heritage home while incorporating modern elements is no easy task. Designer Zoe Murphy, however, embraced this challenge with enthusiasm, transforming her inner-city Victorian terrace into a space that blends old-world charm with contemporary design using PGH’s luxury linear bricks.

When Zoe, her husband Ben, and their children Myra and Roy moved into the Victorian terrace, they found a home rich with heritage features but lacking in space and modern functionality. “We bought the house five years ago,” Zoe explains. “It had a small renovation at the back which was quite charming but not very spacious. We lived in it for two years, planning and redesigning, and finally rebuilt during the first COVID lockdown.”

Central to the redesign was the choice of PGH Bricks’ Morada Range. Imported from Europe, these bricks are known for their luxurious smooth finishes and solid, colour-through construction. Available in Standard size, Split, and slender Linear formats, the Morada collection is synonymous with European style and elegance, making it an ideal choice for high-end architectural projects. They are available in a range of colours but Zoe opted for the Morada Linear bricks in Blanco, a crisp white shade, to create a bright and airy feel in the new open-plan living and dining area. “The original rooms of the house were quite dark,” Zoe says. “Using the Blanco shade really helped to lighten up the space.”

In the renovation, the front four rooms of the house were left largely intact, maintaining their structural integrity but refreshed with rich, moody colours. The real transformation occurred at the rear of the house, where Zoe collaborated with architect Cara Stribley. They aimed to create a new open-plan living area and add a second storey, seamlessly integrating the old with the new.

“The previous owners had added a small mid-century extension, which I quite liked,” Zoe shares. “I wanted to enhance that, creating a juxtaposition between the heritage and mid-century modern elements.”

The Morada luxury Linear bricks in Blanco were used extensively in the new design. They were laid in a stacked bond pattern, a technique where bricks are placed directly on top of each other, creating continuous vertical and horizontal joints. This method not only adds to the mid-century modern aesthetic but also provides a sleek, streamlined look. “We used a stacked bond brick to reference that modern mid-century style,” Zoe explains.

Zoe’s renovation did not extend to a full boundary-to-boundary overhaul but focused on the rear of the house. This area now features floor-to-ceiling windows, enhancing the connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. “We wanted to preserve the character of the heritage structure while introducing modern elements that make the home more livable,” Zoe notes.

The use of PGH Bricks’ Morada Range was pivotal in achieving this balance. The elegant, smooth finish of the Morada bricks complements both the traditional and contemporary aspects of the home, creating a cohesive design that bridges different architectural eras.
