Limestone and Light

There’s a particular kind of calm that comes from being surrounded by natural stone. In this Mt Duneed custom home, that feeling of earthy luxury is present from the moment you arrive, carried through every space with natural clarity and an understated presence that only handcrafted limestone can deliver.

Built by the owner as a long-held dream, the four bedroom, three bathroom residence was imagined as a tropical oasis deeply grounded in its material identity. To bring that vision to life, the owners engaged master stonemasons Wilmoore Allstone, selecting premium Mt Gambier Limestone from Bruhn Limestone as the defining element of the entire architecture.

The commitment to stone is remarkable. Rather than treating it as an accent, the clients made limestone the hero of the build, using it both inside and out. The home’s double-skin limestone walls, a rare and technically demanding approach, give the structure its presence and deliver impressive thermal performance, achieving a 7-Star energy rating with significantly reduced reliance on framing and plasterboard. The effect is both architectural and atmospheric, being cool in summer, warm in winter, and visually cohesive in every direction.

Inside, polished concrete floors lead to an expansive open plan living area, where a high open-framed ceiling cladded with timber gives the space an expansive feel. At the centre sits a dramatic double-sided fireplace crafted from Harcourt granite rock, an earthy, sculptural form that brings texture and warmth to the heart of the home. Adjacent to the living area, a glass-fronted cellar sits behind a sliding wall of glass, adding a subtle moment of theatre to the experience of daily living.

The master suite embraces the project’s resort style brief, opening to a private courtyard where limestone home surround an outdoor stone bathtub complimented by Harcourt granite. Every area touches stone in some way, reinforcing the material’s tactile luxury and its role in shaping the home’s identity.

Outdoors, tall limestone boundary walls create a sheltered micro-climate around the pool and entertaining areas, their soft tones working effortlessly with bluestone paving. An external open fireplace extends the home’s lifestyle appeal into the cooler months, making the outdoor spaces as inviting in winter as they are in summer.
