There was a time when wine storage belonged behind closed doors, tucked into basements or hidden behind cellar doors. Today, some of the most memorable wine collections are becoming part of the architecture itself, designed to be seen, experienced and woven into the atmosphere of a space. This striking installation by Vine and Vault demonstrates exactly how far luxury wine cellar design has evolved.

Created as part of the extensive renovation of a heritage listed golf club in Barwon Heads, the brief centred around creating a feature that would do more than simply store wine. The client envisioned a dramatic display that would become a defining architectural moment within the interior while also supporting the operation of the adjoining dining space. The answer was a sophisticated two-sided glass wine cellar that creates a visual connection between arrival and experience.

Positioned between the hallway and dining area, glazing on both sides transforms the collection into a living installation. As guests move through the corridor, the wine display draws the eye forward, offering layered views into the dining room beyond and creating anticipation before guests even take their seats. Rather than feeling like an addition to the space, the cellar becomes part of how the interior unfolds.

Black powdercoated steel framing, doors, and glazing introduce a refined contrast against the existing heritage fabric. The detailing feels deliberate and architectural, delivering contemporary sophistication while respecting the character and history of the building.

Functionality, however, sits just as strongly behind this luxury wine cellar design. The installation incorporates lockable steel-framed access doors and accommodates approximately 700 bottles arranged in a horizontal display configuration. Storing bottles label up not only allows for easy identification but creates a striking floating effect across the wall, turning the collection itself into a design feature.

Importantly, this is not simply a display. The entire wine wall is fully climate controlled, allowing wines to be stored and served at ideal temperatures while remaining visible to patrons. Guests are able to browse the collection on display and make selections directly from the cellar, creating a more immersive hospitality experience and strengthening the connection between the collection and the dining environment.

Integrated LED lighting elevates the installation further, bringing warmth and atmosphere to the surrounding spaces while ensuring the wine display remains a focal point from day into evening.

Behind projects like this is a Vine and Vault’s design philosophy that recognises no two collections or spaces are ever the same. Working across both residential and commercial environments throughout Australia, Vine and Vault specialise in creating bespoke wine storage solutions tailored to the architecture, lifestyle and functional requirements of each project. From dramatic feature wine walls and integrated cabinetry through to walk-in cellars and large scale climate controlled environments, each installation is individually designed to suit the proportions, conditions and experience of the space.

Drawing on in-house steel fabrication, architectural glazing and specialist cellar conditioning systems, the team approaches wine storage as part of the overall design narrative – creating spaces that protect and present collections while becoming standout features in their own right. At Barwon Heads Golf Club, that philosophy has been realised beautifully through a wine collection that has now become part of the architecture itself.
