Having purchased an old fibro shack, with view to building her dream home, the owner of this unique home in Burleigh Heads, teamed up with architect Paul Uhlmann and builder Machtech Constructions to help bring her vision to life, and the vision was certainly spectacular.

Dubbed the ‘Floating House’ the home has become somewhat of an iconic landmark in the area, due both to its space-ship like exterior and that, at a distance, it appears to be hovering above the ground. Built on stilts, the home is sitting above the ground, however the floating spaceship effect is enhanced due to the solid rectangular profile of the home which is broken up only by geometric shaped windows, being painted in contrasting tones; the upper half is white whilst the lower half has been painted in a charcoal, creating a shadow effect which blends in with the greenery below.

The home (or spaceship) appears to be moving down the hill. It is, and in a very clever way that internally has created tiered levels that ensure each of the three levels has ocean views. Each level also has a unique feature, there is a pool, an outdoor bathtub and a fabulous built-in fire pit and seating area for entertaining on cooler evenings.

With its stark contemporary exterior one might expect the home to be uninviting but thanks to the owner’s love of timber, which has been used extensively throughout, the home has a very warm and inviting ambience. The large open plan kitchen, dining and living area, incorporate timber floors, timber veneer cabinetry and a timber clad ceiling which has also been highlighted by cleverly placed lighting, adding even more amber tones to the room.

The luxurious master suite is like something you may find in a luxury hotel. The open-plan space has been cleverly separated to accommodate the bathroom so that it also has views out to the ocean, whilst the bath has been placed on the terrace for romantic baths under the stars.

With a very narrow, 405sqm, severely sloping site with difficult street access, some builders may have shied away from a project like this. Gold Coast luxury home builder, Mactech Constructions, however, pride themselves on their experience and ability to work with difficult sites and have built a reputation for building what others have deemed ‘unbuildable’.

Mactech’s skill and experience are clearly evident in the outcome of this spectacular home which despite the difficult building conditions was finished in only 8 months and with quality craftsmanship that is evident throughout.
