Roche Bobois turned heads at Milan Design Week 2024 with its latest collaboration with Chinese artist and designer Jiang Qiong Er. The new designer furniture collection, titled “Bamboo Mood,” draws inspiration from bamboo, a significant symbol in Chinese culture representing integrity, resilience, simplicity, and harmony. With this striking new collection for Roche Bobois, Jiang Qiong Er breathes new life into these values through her innovative contemporary designs.

The collection features a range of exquisite pieces of designer furniture, including seats, a console, cocktail tables, decorative ceramic accessories, lamps, rugs, and screens. The screen, a key piece in Chinese decorative art. The console’s base reveals the same bamboo pattern as the screen. The sofa, with its plump, soft headrest, offers a supple interpretation of bamboo, providing both comfort and a sense of ancient wisdom. The cocktail tables, resembling bamboo stems cut around the nodes, are available in lacquered monochrome or with a wood-effect top. The rugs, crafted from a blend of wool and bamboo, feature graceful bamboo cane designs in vibrant hues.

Jiang Qiong Er Roche Bobois

Born in Shanghai, Jiang Qiong Er is the daughter of an artist and the granddaughter of an architect. She graduated with a degree in art and design from Tong Ji University in Shanghai and studied modern languages in Nice and design and interior architecture at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Her commitment to reviving traditional Chinese craftsmanship led to the founding of Shang Xia with Hermès in 2009.

Jiang Qiong Er’s works are exhibited in prestigious museums, including the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and Musée Guimet in Paris. Her honors include being named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 2013 and Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite in 2016. Jiang Qiong Er expresses her fascination with bamboo: “Bamboo has always fascinated me. Elegant, resilient, fluid, and peaceful, it counters strong winds with insolence and play. Bamboo bends but does not break. It whispers, trembles, filters the light, and plays with shadow. Timeless. It may seem fragile, yet it provides scaffolding for the world’s tallest skyscrapers. I designed this new bamboo-inspired collection as an invitation to travel; an inexhaustible source of inspiration, poetry, and dreams.”
