Peninsula Harmony

This new Rye custom home by Mornington Peninsula custom builder Smith Builders, is a perfect example of how modern architecture can not only adapt to, but harness the power of the landscape, to create a structure that sits in complete harmony with the natural surroundings. Comprised of a series of timber volumes that respond to the natural bush vegetation, the striking minimalist design complements rather than dominates the undulating site, maintaining spectacular sea views to the south whilst capturing the northerly aspect to ensure the home is energy efficient.

Blackbutt timber is the hero of the design, prominent in both the external and internal material selection. Externally the straight-grained, Australian hardwood is paired with greystone and glass. This combination works well to reinforce the structure’s simple lines as well as reflecting the homes natural surroundings, whilst also creating a contemporary structure that is visually striking.

Located in a bushfire prone area, extra consideration was given to both safety and sustainability in the home’s design and material selection. Adding warmth to the clean minimalist lines, Blackbutt has again been used extensively on the home’s interior including flooring, ceiling and wall cladding. Despite this the home is not lacking in light, this is thanks to both the orientation and extensive glazing that includes clerestory windows that allow natural light to flood into the home.

The split level design incorporates four bedrooms, three bathrooms and several communal living areas, as well as areas of magnificent solitude, such as a private study and moody bathroom that features natural bluestone and marble. Embracing the site, the unconventional shape also adds protection from the sun and wind to the outdoor entertaining area and pool.
