Port Lincoln

Ever since Peter Teakle Wines opened the doors to its iconic Cellar Door in 2020, the distinctive building has become synonymous with the Eyre Peninsula. Locals and tourists alike have flocked to the multi-million dollar Port Lincoln landmark, which has become well-known for its curved aesthetic, that is reminiscent of a trio of wine barrels.

The expertly constructed multi-million dollar project was designed by Port Lincoln-based Kym Clarke Constructions and Penna Designs, and has been the recipient of a string of awards including the Best Building Excellence Award in the 2 to 5 million dollar category at the Master Builders SA Awards, also the project has been nominated to represent South Australia in the Australian National Awards at Cairns, Queensland in April 2022. The unique design was the result of a fruitful collaboration between Port Lincoln-based Kym Clarke Construction, Penna Design and Peter Teakle himself, that is both visually striking and sustainable.

Clarke from Kym Clarke Construction, says he was approached by Peter Teakle to design a processing plant and cellar door. We located the Cellar Door at the Western End, because of the incredible views. I then said to Peter, “I think let’s build this in the shape of wine barrels.”  I wanted it internally to look like the inside of wine barrels and the external to have the wine bands and rivet to emulate wine barrells.”

“To create a curved roof that resembles wine barrels, we needed to build an inner water proof roof, with marine ply and bituthene membrane coating, and then we had to create an outer roof, using Europlus flatlock panel, recessed 310x.55 unilux Ashwood supplied by Revolution Roofing.

More than three kilometers of spotted gum timberwork, and a unique bent structural steel were used to create the distinctive structure, while each curved window was lifted and manhandled into place. The wine barrel theme is also reflected in the interiors from the custom bar and feature furniture which stands alongside elements of handcrafted stonework which was individually cut to 15-20 mm even joints, representing the surrounding landscape.

To ensure the wine is kept at a consistently cool temperature, Clarke constructed the roof using 150mm thick cool room polystyrene, cladded metal deck supplied by Bondor.  “The walls were constructed in concrete precast panels and 150 mm thick cool roof and ceiling panels, this was done to ensure the temperature is consistent all year round.”
