When it comes to designing interiors, the scale of a 54m superyacht demands an entirely different level of consideration. Every surface is exposed to movement, salt air and constant use, yet expectations around finish remain uncompromising. When Sydney superyacht MISCHIEF underwent a $15 million dollar refurbishment, the brief extended beyond visual impact. It called for materials that could hold their own in a demanding marine environment while still delivering the level of refinement expected on board.

Led by DKO Architecture, the transformation introduces a more contemporary, relaxed interior direction. Spaces feel lighter, more open, with a clearer connection between indoor and outdoor living zones. Within this, flooring plays a central role, setting the tone from the moment guests step aboard and carrying a sense of continuity through entertaining areas, private suites and circulation spaces.

The selection of European oak from Mardegan Legno brings a natural warmth that balances the crisp architectural detailing. Crafted from Slovenian oak and finished in a soft, light tone from the Emotions & Colours collection, the timber introduces subtle grain variation that gives the interiors texture without overpowering them. It’s a palette that reflects light and enhances the sense of volume throughout the yacht.

Beyond appearance, performance was critical. Marine environments present a unique set of challenges, from fluctuating humidity levels to constant foot traffic and exposure to fine salt particles. Mardegan Legno’s engineered construction is designed to handle these conditions. Multiple layers of carefully bonded timber create a stable structure that resists movement, while precision milling ensures consistency across every board.

The finishing process is equally deliberate. Advanced surface treatments are developed to protect the timber from wear, staining and moisture ingress, while maintaining the natural character of the oak. This allows the flooring to retain its integrity over time, even in high-use zones.

Across MISCHIEF, this translates into flooring that not only looks refined on day one, but continues to perform long into the future. High-traffic entertaining areas maintain their finish, while private spaces offer a softer, more tactile experience underfoot.

What makes this project particularly compelling is how seamlessly the flooring integrates into the broader design narrative. It doesn’t compete for attention, but elevates every space it touches. The light oak tones sit comfortably alongside custom joinery, stone surfaces and tailored furnishings, creating a cohesive and contemporary interior.

For a vessel of this calibre, material selection becomes a defining factor. It’s not simply about aesthetics, but about choosing finishes that can endure a highly specific environment without compromise. The inclusion of Mardegan Legno throughout MISCHIEF reflects this level of consideration, where craftsmanship and durability are equally valued.

The result is a superyacht designed for both performance and experience – capable of hosting on a grand scale while being grounded by materials that bring warmth and texture to every space.
