With a massive10,000sqm building site in Perth’s northern suburbs, Zorzi’s in-house design team – Rietveld Architects had the ability to explore numerous design possibilities for this luxurious new Perth custom home. Without the usual constraints of space, or privacy issues that come with standard suburban blocks, the team had the freedom to create a luxurious single storey residence that takes advantage of the natural topography of the site and maximises the stunning bush outlook.
The approach to the home begins with a curving driveway that leads from a bespoke gate to a grand car court. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom house reveals itself gradually, with the block’s slight downward slope enhancing the dramatic effect of the arrival.
The facade is a bold reimagining of classical architectural elements, featuring a modern play on the classic pitched roof. The elevation and style include sharply defined edges and large single panes of clear, triangular glass that emphasize the pitched angles. Another significant element of the design is the use of Austral Bricks’ ribbed brickwork throughout the home, providing added texture and sense of strength.
Designed in an asymmetrical H shape over one level, the design features two distinct wings linked by the central open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area connecting to two courtyards and serving as a bridge between two wings. One wing houses the master suite, a private office, and a gym, while the other is dedicated to the guest quarters, including an office and children’s bedrooms.
The main kitchen, dining, and lounge areas link the two zones with large floor-to-ceiling, glass pane sliding doors and windows opening up both sides of the living area to two individual courtyards and allowing in natural light and air.
The internal courtyards, of which each room in the home has views into or directly opens onto, were inspired by homes in the cities of southern Europe which offer calm greenery within a central courtyard as a respite from the busy city. The design takes advantage of the beautiful surrounding natural environment, with each room having either sneak peeks or sweeping vistas of the woodland.
As the site slopes down away from the street, the alfresco and pool area is elevated and overlooks the trees to the distance. The home is inwardly focused on the courtyard and the pool area with glass fence to not obstruct the view, with almost every room either looking directly into or accessing these spaces. Attention to detail extends throughout this beautiful single storey home, from the porcelain kitchen benchtops to the metal line and timber finishes, backlit mirrors and floating cabinetry.
Being a bushfire prone area, safety features needed to be integrated and had to be designed in strict accordance with the requirements for the area. These were thoughtfully designed into this luxury single storey home where river stones are placed as safety buffers but also enhance the visual appeal of the courtyards giving them a floating appearance.
Overall this was a beautiful design and constructed with the building expertise of Zorzi Builders.
