Some families want treasured artworks or heirlooms considered in their new home’s design; this family brought LEGO – and not just a collection, but a passion they wanted embedded into the architecture itself.

The Marillana began with a brief to design a home that not only suits coastal living but celebrates the owners’ unique creative spirit, particularly their lifelong love of LEGO. Brought to life by custom builders Kyros Homes, this 370sqm residence in Golden Bay blends individuality, functionality and a playful edge while also maximising the upper-level ocean views.

The home has a  modern edge but classic finishes including stone cladding and quality timber floor ensure the home has a classic, timeless appeal. Designed to maximise the coastal location, the upper-level features a wide terrace for entertaining while taking in the ocean views.

Adding a sculptural element to the home’s interior is a striking staircase rising through the centre of the home on a black steel spine. Situated against a rock-look tile–clad wall that adds tactile contrast, and framed by feature windows that rise with the stairs, it becomes a key architectural feature of the home that connects both levels.

At the heart of the home, the kitchen makes a confident architectural statement. A full wall of black cabinetry delivers generous, discreet storage, creating a sleek, uninterrupted backdrop for daily life and entertaining alike. Matte-black tapware, sink and integrated appliances reinforce the kitchen’s refined, contemporary character, giving the space a distinctly modern edge. This streamlined palette is carefully balanced by the warmth of the timber floor softening the aesthetic and bringing depth and tactility to the room. The result is a kitchen that feels sophisticated and visually striking, yet welcoming and practical in everyday use.

This modern language continues through the bathrooms, where stone-look tiles and black tapware echo the home’s clean, contemporary sensibility, creating spaces that feel cohesive and refined in their detail.

But nothing says “this is our home” quite like the LEGO display room and a unique LEGO column found at the home’s entry – a custom design created in collaboration with Kyros Homes and built by the family themselves. More than a playful feature, it’s a personal stamp woven into the architecture, a reminder that a custom home should always reflect the people at its centre.

When the home was handed over, the clients gifted Kyros Homes a LEGO version of their logo, now proudly displayed in the office – a small but fitting symbol of a build defined by trust, creativity and genuine connection.
