For founder and Director of multi-award-winning COS Design, Steve Taylor, the creation of the gardens and rear outdoor entertaining space of this Mornington Peninsula home was a project of passion, very close to his heart. Having designed the home itself with striking features that include a red-brick tower-like structure, and incorporating fabulous spaces for indoor plantings, the isolation period during covid presented the perfect opportunity to finish the gardens and create a sophisticated outdoor entertaining space for his new family home.
Working with the home’s unique architecture, a slightly awkward shaped sloping block, and with the main living area situated on the upper-level completely disconnected from the garden below, considerable thought and imagination was required to create outdoor spaces that would harmonise with the home and present a compelling invitation to occupants to head downstairs and enjoy Australia’s great outdoors.
Executed in COS’s renowned, award-winning style, every inch of available space has been utilised to incorporate everything you could possibly desire for refined outdoor living, including a day bed by the pool that includes built in stools and a swim up bar, custom mosaic tiled spa, covered alfresco area, firepit, fireplace and pizza oven – all surrounded by lush coastal gardens.
The pool is positioned 1.2m above ground level to reduce the need for pool fencing while still meeting regulations. Limestone fingers extend along the pool’s perimeter, adding a contemporary edge to the design.
With help from Exquisite Pools, Steve put his heart and soul into the project, personally building the entire landscape himself on weekends and after hours, in between working on clients design projects.
Exceptional planning and execution has resulted in a space that captivates from every angle. Muted tones and colours, foliage contrasts and the unique shapes & forms of the hardscape creating a rich and engaging tapestry that perfectly complements the home’s exterior. The pool’s flowing curves and soft garden beds beautifully contrasting with the building’s strong lines – achieving perfect balance and a outdoor living area that is truly connected to the home and its occupants.
