With an aesthetic reminiscent of a modern-day castle, new luxury custom home in Melbourne’s Kew, is a true testament to the close collaboration between Christopher Doyle Architects, builders Davies Henderson, Limestone Australia, and the exceptional skill and craftsmanship of the master stonemasons at Wilmoore Allstone that brought this spectacular home to life.
The intricate exterior stonework is what defines this stunning home’s unique character and immediately highlights the quality of construction that is found throughout the entire property. Sourced directly from the quarry, Oyster Limestone was cut to exact specifications as per the architect’s vision. The distinctive Ashlar pattern on the walls required ten different block sizes, each carefully positioned according to detailed laminated plans to achieve a highly structured bespoke outcome. On-site, Wilmoore Allstone’s skilled stonemasons worked by hand for over 18 months to refine and assemble the stone elements, ensuring the integrity of each minute detail. Some components were machine cut to expedite the process, but every piece was ultimately finished with absolute precision.
From concept to completion, this project demanded precise coordination between architects, builders, and stonemasons – solid stone arches framing the entrances, round tapered columns and curved stone boundary walls all contribute to shaping the classical aesthetic. Highly specified, the architectural detailing by the Wilmoore Allstone team extends to balustrades, finials adorning the gables, and even crucifixes subtly incorporated into the front fence. The result is a striking façade with commanding street presence.
While much of the exterior consists of solid stone veneer, certain structural elements—such as the driveway walls utilise a 30mm thick stone tile applied over a concrete brick framework to maintain stability. A significant technical challenge in the build was the installation of large stone columns and arches, each requiring wooden arched templates to support the massive stone pieces, weighing over 80kg’s, before being securely joined with mortar and finished to create a seamless integration with the rest of the home.
The rear of the house showcases an impressive series of 17 arches in a mix of elliptical and segmental shapes, each hand-carved and precisely fitted to ensure structural integrity and visual harmony.
This stunning Melbourne custom home exemplifies what is possible in bespoke home design, proving that with expert craftsmanship such as the skilled stonemasons at Wilmoore Allstone, a residence can become not just a home but a lasting architectural landmark.
