It may come as a surprise to many to learn that the Perth suburb of Subiaco is believed to have one of the largest collections of residential stained glass in the world. During the gold boom of the late 1800s, when prosperity reshaped Perth’s architectural landscape, stained glass became a form of artistic expression – a way for the emerging middle class to express their prosperity and individuality through the ornamentation of their homes. Among those preserving this specialised artform today is Tradition Stained Glass (TSG), a Perth based studio led by third generation glass artisan Kim Fitzpatrick, whose work has become synonymous with the restoration and recreation of authentic early Federation stained glass.
TSG’s commitment to the craft goes far beyond restoration. Every project begins with careful research to ensure historical accuracy, sourcing original heritage glass wherever possible and recreating traditional methods of handpainting, firing and leading to ensure that each window not only matches its era but embodies the artistry of the time. This rare dedication to detail and authenticity has made TSG a trusted choice for architects, designers and heritage specialists, with commissions spanning culturally significant projects that include church restorations, government buildings and historic private residences.
At the end of the home’s central hallway, a hand painted window portraying Murrell’s family crest is a striking focal point both inside and outside of the home, Designed by Fitzpatrick it captures the northern light, becoming the symbolic heart of the house. Lit from the inside it adds a warm ambient glow to the alfresco dining area.

Fairview House in Subiaco is a shining example of this craftsmanship. The Queen Anne Federation residence was originally built in 1915 by the Scottish migrant who founded Perth Iceworks. Now a luxury Airbnb, Fairview features one of the most extensive collections of stained glass in Australia, much of which has been restored, recreated or newly designed by Tradition Stained Glass over an 18 year collaboration with the home’s owner, Tom Murrell.
Murrell is deeply committed to preserving Subiaco’s extraordinary legacy of stained and leadlight glass. Beyond restoring Fairview, he frequently conducts tours and talks on the history of leadlight in the area, sharing his passion for the artistry and cultural significance that shaped this distinctive part of Perth’s heritage. In undertaking the restoration of his own beloved residence, Tradition Stained Glass were the obvious choice. As a 110 year old company – TSG is acknowledged as absolute experts in their field and Fitzpatrick’s work on Fairview includes restoring century-old leadlight panels along with crafting new windows inspired by original Federation motifs.
Fairview House exemplifies what Tradition Stained Glass does best – restoring and creating stained glass with an exceptional commitment to each era’s authenticity – whether Federation, Art Deco, ecclesiastical or heritage, every project is approached with the same meticulous craftsmanship and respect for the artistry of its time.
And for those who appreciate heritage and craftsmanship, Fairview House is available to rent on Airbnb. More than a place to stay it is an experience in light, artistry and history, brought back to life through the work of TSG.
