A solo exhibition by Ann Thomson, one of Australia’s iconic female artists is showing at Mitchell Fine Art in Fortitude Valley from 25th March – 27th April.
Thomson, who is originally from Brisbane, has been painting for over 50 years and has taken her art around the world. After periods in New York and London Thomson is now based in Sydney.
Since graduating from the National Art School in 1962 she has become a force in the Australian art scene.
Now in her late 80’s Thomson is known for her vibrant, expressive artworks. Her paintings are drawn from memories and experiences of places and things. Those memories and experiences are in themselves vast and colourful.
Her works are not intended to replicate a scene or a landscape, the intention is to evoke the sense of place and the associated feelings that are induced.
Ann Thomson’s new exhibition draws from a multitude of residencies and painting expeditions around the Brisbane is where I grew up and where my inspiration and influences began”, says Thomson “My painting has always moved between representation and abstraction which I continue to explore today”.
From the Snowy Mountains to the rainforests and islands of Far North Queensland Thomson’s painting explore the concept of air and space.
The exhibition is showing at Mitchell Fine Art, 86 Arthur Street Fortitude Valley from 25th March until 18th April.
Official opening celebrations will be held on Friday 27th March from 6pm. On Saturday 28th March Ann Thomson will conduct an Artist Talk and Q&A from 2pm. All events are free. Contact the gallery for more information.
