Recently winning the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s President’s Award ‘West Village’ by Sekisui House in Brisbane’s West End has achieved what many inner-city developments aspire to but just don’t get right, transforming a run-down inner-city area into residential, commercial and green spaces to create a vibrant community with a historical connection to the site whilst adding cultural value.
At the heart of the development was the restoration of the 1920’s heritage buildings of the old Peters Ice Cream factory – a significant part of history of the West End West Village also includes 6,500sqm of public spaces, featuring The Common – an expansive 1,400sqm landscaped green space fronting West End’s vibrant Boundary Street, a mix of apartments and town homes in seven contemporary buildings, retail, work, dining, entertainment and commercial spaces, and a full-size supermarket. Each area is connected by pedestrian and retail laneways and complemented by ample car and bicycle parking, GoGet Car share and space for markets, events and festivals.
Contributing significantly more to the development than just ‘artist in residence’, David Bromley and Yuge Bromley were involved in the project from the early stages, helping to develop an artistic vision that has added to the vibrancy and cultural value of the site and without doubt contributed to the overall success of the development.
Working with the developers, architects, landscape architects and lighting designers, David and Yuge assisted with evolving various aspects of the precincts and were also engaged for the interior styling of the lobby, key entrance points, laneways, community art installations and an entire loft-style penthouse which was a draw-card for the residential precinct.
In awarding the project the judge commented;
“West Village’s innovative marketing approach has truly brought to life the project for its residents, workers and visitors who enjoy its unique setting. The delivery of an ‘artist in residence’ program on site combined with local festivals and market days enabled demonstration of the project’s qualities in its early stages.”
