Perth’s Mt Lawley is famous for its tree lined avenues and grand heritage style residences, so building a new abode that is almost entirely unrecognisable amongst the historic local architecture is a rare achievement to say the least.
And yet, this is exactly what homeowners Kath and Peter Soumanis have accomplished – their gorgeous new home integrates so harmoniously within the streetscape that it could easily be mistaken for one of the suburb’s original 100 year old beauties that has only been possible due to the expertise of master craftsman like Kim Fitzpatrick from Tradition Stained Glass who designed the many windows that feature extensively throughout the property and were integral to creating the home’s classic heritage character.
Having previously built a home, Kath was no stranger to the process and with a clear vision for their new residence she took the project on herself, carefully selecting tradespeople and artisans based on their skill and expertise in their respective fields. As a third generation glass artist, and with a reputation of having designed some of Perth’s most beautiful leadlight windows including exquisite entry doors that were recently installed at Parliament House, Kath entrusted Kim with the design process. The property’s charm begins at the front door, where Kim’s intricate leadlight creations immediately grab your attention and connect the property to Mt Lawley’s architectural legacy.
Each of the beautiful, hand-crafted glass windows found throughout this impressive residence was personally designed by Kim, reflecting the style of an earlier era, perfectly accompanying the myriad of other heritage features that include 4 metre high coffered ceilings, wainscotting, arched doorways, intricate mouldings and more. A sophisticated neutral palette of jarrah floorboards stained a rich chocolate brown and stark white walls highlight the exceptional finishes and architectural details that can be found at every turn.
One of the home’s standout features is without doubt the living space which features a traditional style fireplace from Subiaco Restoration, complemented by gorgeous Art Deco style windows by Tradition Stained Glass which have been symmetrically positioned on either side creating a stunning effect. A spectacular dome above pays homage to the grandeur of traditional homes and draws the eye upwards, anchoring the space within the modern open-plan kitchen, dining and living area.
In this Mt Lawley home, Kath and Peter have achieved something truly special – a place where the past and present coexist harmoniously, a result that could not be achieved without the exquisite craftsmanship of the team involved.
